Three Things I Did This Weekend That Made My Life Easier

If you’re like me, you’re busy. Even the weekends are busy. I can’t count the number of times on a Friday I’ve been like, “Thank God it’s Friday!” and then said, “Oh…wait…I have just as much to do in the next two days as I did in the last five…”

However, this past weekend, I did three simple things (that didn’t take me long at all) and they honestly made my life a little bit easier.

1. I purchased a scrub brush for our shower

One of the selling points when we bought this house was the HUGE shower in the Master Bathroom. I still love that shower, but it’s not the easiest thing in the world to clean. Mostly because it’s so big…but also because it’s all tile. Over the past few weeks I’ve noticed that I NOTICE the dirtiness when I’m actually in there taking shower, so I decided to fix that issue. I purchased the scrub brush, filled it with soap, and, for the past three days, as I’ve been in the shower I’ve searched for any bit of dirt I could find, and then spent a couple minutes at the end of my shower scrubbing it and then washing it down with our detachable shower head. Perfecto!

2. I purchased a bin for our pantry

Doesn’t everyone have a bag full of plastic grocery bags somewhere in their house? Please say you do and make me feel better! No worries, when I make a quick run to the grocery store, I use my re-usable shopping bags, but, once a week, when I go for a full haul, I still have them bag it in plastic bags. As I unload everything, I would take the bags and put them inside another bag in the bottom right-hand of our pantry. We use them daily for many things, the most common of which is cleaning out CoCo the kitty’s litter box (which happens at least twice a day). However, it was almost a once-a-day struggle to get the bags BACK into the bag…and if you left the pantry door open any amount of time, the animals would get in and PLAY in the bags…it was really getting annoying. So, bin purchased. Bags stored. No more frustration.

3. I cleaned the microwave

I don’t use the microwave too much myself – my hubby uses it more…and, poor man, I don’t know if he’d know how to clean the microwave if he wanted to! But I had noticed that it was getting a little bit yucky…at inconvenient times, though. Do you do that? It’s almost midnight and you suddenly see something that needs to be done and sleep is just more important? Yeah. Story of my life. So I placed a glass bowl of one part water one part vinegar in the microwave, ran it for 9 minutes and then wiped it down in about 5 minutes. And yes, I’ve opened it up several times since just to look and see how pretty and clean it is!

In the end, I probably spent about 15-20 minutes doing these three things combined. And believe me, I’ve gotten so muchΒ satisfaction over the frustration being gone that those 20 minutes were WELL worth it!

So what’s bothering you around YOUR house? Why not pick ONE thing this week and take care of it! You’ll be so glad you did! You’ll feel better, be less agitated, and be encouraged that you can make change if you want to!

What will YOU do this week?

  1. Can you come clean my microwave now LOL! Mine needs a good scrub down – thanks for the reminder!

    • I’ve been trying to evaluate different spaces in my home to see what needs a strong storage hand. I’ve found that I’m not as organized as I thought I was LOL

  2. I am definitely going to use that microwave cleaning tip! The scrub brush is a very good idea as well! I will hit up some stores this coming weekend and see if I can find one.

  3. My microwave is nice and clean i do it everyday when i am doing the dishes because one of the kids normally leaves it in a mess lol.I have so many plastic bags they drive me crazy i need to think of some great craft to use them.

    • Now that’s a good idea, Kay! Cleaning the microwave every day so it doesn’t get grody! Thank you!

  4. My pet peeve is other family members not covering whatever they are microwaving and then not cleaning it up right away! I don’t use the microwave that often, but when I do, I want it clean.

My stash of grocery bags is in the cabinet above the fridge. I keep saying I’m going to come up with a stylish way to store them, but they are still there. πŸ™‚

    • Yes, I’m a stickler for that cover! And IT gets washed often! Alas, I’m not tall enough to reach the cabinets above the fridge…I have to keep things I need often on a lower level for my vertically-challenged self πŸ™‚

  5. Sounds like you worked in the house all weekend long!
I keep a scrub brush in my shower. We also installed a hand held sprayer so that rinsing the walls down after each shower is easy and rinsing after scrubbing is easy.
You can actually just used plain water in the microwave to loosen baked on debris. I have had to do that many times during my 16 years of residential cleaning. Not covering things in the microwave may be my biggest kitchen pet peeve!

  6. I have to clean my master shower too, a chore I hate. I was able to clean out my entire son’s room and go through all his toys, donate and toss. Let’s see how long it looks like that LOL.

    • HA! My mom used to do that in our rooms and I’d get so mad that she got rid of something I might have wanted LOL You go, girl! πŸ™‚

  7. I also don’t use the microwave very often but when I do, I definitely know of the mess my younger brothers can cause. Maybe I’ll look into cleaning it too. πŸ™‚

  8. Sometimes small things go a long way, don’t they! Around here we still stick to no work on Sunday. It still is busy sometimes if we have things going on in Church or company over, but generally speaking I so enjoy a day off.

    • Yes, I did most of this on Saturday. We try to rest as much as possible on Sunday, too…and there’s nothing like a good Sunday afternoon nap! πŸ™‚

  9. Thank you for that Microwave tip. Mine was on the schedule to be clean tomorrow and looking at it made my head spin trying to figure out how to get all the stuck on stuff off. The vinegar and water trick just may be the answer thank you again.

    • It really is pretty amazing. Then you don’t have to scrub! It just all wipes off!

  10. Yep, we have a kitchen cupboard with a shelf full of plastic bags, and I’m not just saying that to make you feel better. πŸ™‚

I like the shower brush idea!

  11. I used an old toothbrush in my shower- THAT took forever! Have you tried the plastic bags in paper towel rolls trick? I still need a bin, but they dispense nicely.

    • Oh goodness, yes, I do like the size of the toothbrush for grout…but I’m with you, it takes too long! And no, I haven’t tried the plastic bags in a paper towel roll trick! That’s re-purposing, too!

    • They are fun! This one even has a handy dandy lever to dispense the soap! I haven’t had one like that before!

  12. I just cleaned my microwave tonight after dinner, LOL. I clean every day, all the time. I am a cleaning machine and I need to learn how to let some of that go and just enjoy dirty.

  13. I literally was JUST thinking about cleaning my shower. I was having a shower and thinking, “man, we need a scrub brush to clean off the grout between the tiles…”. It’s like you read my mind haha

    • It’s amazing what 15 un-interrupted minutes will do for ya, right? Thanks for your comment, Jane!
