Cheap & Easy Ideas for Updating the Look of Your Front Door – A Guest Post!

I’ve been looking at my house from the outside recently. You know how you do. Winter is pretty much over. The weather is turning towards Spring. And you feel the need for something fresh and clean and NEW! So when Elizabeth Hill contacted me and asked if I was interested in publishing a post on updating your front door, I thought that was just what I might be looking for! So let’s see what kind of ideas she has for us…

As summer approaches, looking for ways to enhance the look of your front door can be a pretty exciting endeavor, as there are many options to explore!

Here are some of the most exciting types of changes that you can make:

1. Update Your Door Handles

If you live in the UK or even in some of the historic areas of America, your door handle actually might be quite an antique. On the other hand, all door hardware (like handles) have an expected life, and if they no longer fit as a design statement or have lost some of their functionality, then upgrading them to the latest style is a good idea. You may have seen several online stories about the smart-phone/smart-lock companies that created door handles that can be controlled by using your smart phone and a software application. Now that some of those locks are on the market, people have enjoyed making the changeover as it gives them more control over who comes and goes in and out of their house than before. A great place to actually find updated handles is at Door Handles Ltd, one of the UK’s largest online suppliers of door handles and accessories.

2. Roll Back Your Door Handles

It may sound a little strange to go retro or even more antique than the door that you already have, but if you are going for design effect, an antique door handle will definitely impress! Consider the old chapel in Canterbury. The door handles are 1500 years old โ€“ yet, they still work very well.

Salamanca, Spain is a great source for antique door handles that can liven up your door. Their door handles and knockers that can be attached are well known throughout the world and are easily shipped worldwide.

3. Update the Finish on Your Door

Many people will tell you that re-staining or painting a front door is a lengthy project. Yet, if the wood is good and you would like to reveal it more, or it is too exposed and you would like to add layers of paint, redoing your finish makes a lot of sense. The key to success is normally finding a coating that is compatible and applying it in a fashion that does not exceed the outer boundaries of the recommended application process.

We all do seasonal things to decorate our front door for our own enjoyment. Making permanent changes can be just as simple if you plan ahead and find the right source to purchase your new-look materials.

Thanks, Elizabeth! I must admit, I never thought of actually purchasing hardware that was OLDER than what I had, but what a good idea!

So whatcha think? Do YOU have any ideas on how to freshen up the look of your home for Spring?

  1. We painted our front door a nice bright red color and love it! We plan to add a brass kick plate and replace the lighting fixture right next to it as well. Spring brings out the DIY in all of us, doesn’t it!

  2. My front door is red, too, but I’ve been thinking of changing things up this spring. It’s been red for a long, long time. I love, love, love the door handle in that second picture. Spring does bring out the “let’s redo the entire house, inside and out” crazy part of me. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I recently painted our front door but have not updated the hardware. Those little touches do make it look more polished. Now to put it on my to-do list.. lol

  4. I painted my front door yellow last year, which I like, but the paint has chipped already and I need to redo it. Thank you so much for sharing this at Bloggers Brags this week. I am pinning it to our group board on Pinterest. Have a great week, and please visit us again next week!
