Perfecting An Action Plan for When Your House is Showing! (FREE PRINTABLE INCLUDED!)

If you’ve been around the blog at all, you’ve seen the action: you know we recently sold our home, bought another one, and moved. I have to say, I’m SO glad that’s over with!!! Soon you’ll start to see projects from the new house pop up here, but right now, I’m still touching on a few things related to the selling process!

If any of you has ever had your house on the market, you know one of the most stressful parts of the details is when you get a showing.

Now, you WANT the showings. You WANT the action! You want someone to walk through your house and look at it and comment on it and want others to see it. You want someone to LIKE your house – because you want someone to BUY it! But, when you’re in the middle of a busy day and you get a call from a realtor that says, “Can a buyer see the house in 30 minutes?” – WOAH. That is enough to throw you for a major loop!

Couple with new home

If you’re a single person, or even a couple, this kind of thing can be worked out fairly easily. But, if you’re a couple with infant twins and a dog and a cat and childcare folks coming and going and home maintenance folks coming and going and cleaning folks coming and going (because you can no longer handle things on your own anymore), well. That kind of action complicates things quite a bit!

When our home was on the market and showing, the girls were 8 months old, I was working part-time, my hubby was working full-time, and we had childcare, home maintenance and cleaning folks all in and out all week long. So one never really knew what any given day might hold. I got everyone together and made sure we were all straight on “the showing plan”. Here’s what mine looked like:

Pea Pickin’ Cake – A Family Recipe!

In our family, when it’s someone’s birthday, THEY get to pick what kind of cake they want! And quite often, the cake that is chosen is our Pea Pickin’ Cake.

What? What in the world is a Pea Pickin’ Cake?! I know y’all are wondering…and honestly, I’m not entirely sure the exact history of this cake! Some say it came out of a Methodist Church in Atlanta, some say it came from the country singer Tennessee Ernie Ford, and some say it’s just a traditional southern cake recipe that everyone loves. There’s even a variation of it called a Pig Pickin’ Cake (which is even more confusing than Pea Pickin’, if you ask me, that includes coconuts and pecans!)

So, I’m for sure that there are other Pea Pickin’ Cakes out there, but this is the recipe that our family has used for years…and it’s foolproof, I tell you. Not to mention DELICIOUS. (And it’s the perfect way to say farewell to Summer and look forward to Fall!) Let’s dig in!

Pea Pickin’ Cake

1 yellow cake mix
1/2 cup oil
4 eggs
1 11-ounce can Mandarin Oranges (I half-drained my can)

1. Mix all together.

Fall Holiday Shelf! (With a Couple of New Decorations and a FREE PRINTABLE!)

So far this year, you’ve journeyed along with me as I tested five new Fall recipes (CLICK HERE IF YOU MISSED THAT AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT NOW), and you’ve seen the outside of our home all decorated for Fall! (CLICK HERE IF YOU MISSED THAT AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT NOW!)

I’ve had a few people ask me about the decor around the inside of the house, and specifically: the Holiday Shelf!

For those who are new around here, my Holiday Shelf is my weak attempt at pretending I have a mantle. Here in Florida, we don’t have too many fireplaces, meaning we don’t have too many mantels, meaning I can’t decorate a mantel for all the seasons and holidays that I enjoy decorating for. So I’ve substituted a shelf in our foyer for that…and the Holiday Shelf was born!

Anyhoo, this is old hat to most of you – so, may I present to you, the 2015 Fall Holiday Shelf!

I know, I know what you’re thinking already. BLACK AND GOLD?! What on earth! Those aren’t FALL colors!

Well, here’s the thing. I’ve been itching to do some kind of decorating with black and gold for a while now, so I decided that now was as good a time as any. And mainly because…I found THIS:

Questions to Ask of a Painter – with a FREE PRINTABLE Included!

You may have heard me mention in previous posts that we are gearing up to have our house painted. We didn’t LOVE the color when we bought the house two years ago, but there were a few more pressing things that we wanted to take care of before painting got to the top of the priority list. You know how that goes when you buy a home!

So now, we’re ready! We have the money set aside, we’re in a good season for painting in Florida, and we’re doing the MOST fun part: looking for a painting company.

Hands down, one of my LEAST favorite things when it comes to home ownership is looking for “a guy”.

You know how people do. “Oh, you’re gonna get your house painted? I know a guy!” And while some folks are just handy with EVERYTHING, we are NOT those folks. And it’s not for lack of trying…we just are not those people! What we ARE is people who work hard so we can pay other people to do things that we can’t do. And the world needs people like that, too!

So far, we’ve got “guys” (or gals, as the case may be!) for pest control, lawn care, screening, garage door, air conditioning and carpentry. I think that’s it. So I’m in the midst of the hunt for the painting “guy”.

While calling and emailing and searching, I decided I would be much more productive if I could do it in a more organized manner, so I created this:

Signature creations

Organized, and cheerfully colorful, too! (These are the things that help me get stuff done!)

And if you’d like more information on the process of having your home painted, check this out: I guest-posted on this very subject over at Sly Deluxe, an awesome home improvement site! If you’d like to read “Tips for Choosing  a Painting Company for Your Home”, CLICK HERE!

Have you had YOUR home painted? Do you have “a guy”? Any other questions you would add?

Due to the amount of comments from all of my wonderful readers, it is not always possible for me to respond to each one. However, I absolutely do read them all, and if you’d like to address something specific, or have a question for me, please don’t hesitate to email me at Kristen@theroadtodomestication.com. I will respond to your email as soon as possible! Thank you for visiting the blog!
