Making Use of Keepsakes

Our first set of dishes originally belonged to my Grandma.

My family had moved my grandma into an assisted living facility when I was in college, and she no longer had any use for her kitchenware or dishes or serving items. Instead of throwing everything away or searching for someone to go through and sell it, my family simply boxed it all up and stored it for me! When my hubby and I got married (just before my grandma passed away), I hardly registered for any kitchen items since I already had almost everything we needed! It was kinda neat! (SUPER neat when I would pull down a dish, flip it over and see her name written on the bottom in blue Sharpie pen with a smiley face included!) All the keepsakes made it seem like she was right there in my kitchen with me.

When we were gearing up to move to our current home, I realized that everything I had from her wouldn’t match my new kitchen. Not only that, but everything I had from her was at least 50 years old, and the wear and tear on her dishes, especially, was starting to show. I knew it was time for me to get a newer set of dishes. I did that, and then checked with the family to see if anyone wanted what I had of Grandma’s. After sharing most of the keepsakes with other family members, I had a few left over that I wanted to keep in use around my home. Three of those pieces were simple saucers – gray with a light blue pinstripe running their edges.

And I had an idea!

I picked up a couple of cute little jars from Michael’s…

DIY Summer Wreath!

Hopefully wherever you live now you’re feeling the effects of summer! Here in Florida, it’s HOT. I’m eternally grateful for air conditioning, that’s for sure! But I’m also eternally grateful to live near the beach! We’re near enough to be able to go over to the beach for a long or short weekend (this past Saturday we spent the afternoon and evening at John’s Pass) but far enough away that our insurance premiums aren’t “coastal”! It’s a beautiful thing!

So when I decorated my Summer Holiday Shelf this month, I did it “beachy”! Did you see it? If not, CLICK HERE to see what I’m rambling on about. But what I ran into was that I couldn’t find any kind of beachy door decor. I like to hang something that coordinates with the shelf on the inside of the front door, since it’s right next the shelf. After a few days of searching all my favorite spots, I listened to my husband (who constantly tells me, if you can’t find what you like, just make it yourself like you do everything else!) and decided to make it myself. I thought I’d share with all of you, too, because it was super easy!

Here’s my “ingredients”:
