Lighting Tricks You Need in Your Home

The overhead light bulbs blew in our nursery the other day. We didn’t happen to have any replacement bulbs on hand, for a minute, I thought, oh gosh, what on earth am I gonna get accomplished in this lighting? How am I gonna change diapers in the dark?! Then I remembered that I actually have a lamp in the nursery as a part of the decor. (Mommy brain. They say you get your brain back after you have the baby. Lies, I tell you. All lies!) I turned on the lamp and it worked beautifully, of course. Perfect!

As I started to look around the room, I realized that I liked the room even MORE with the lamp light than I did with the overhead light! Funny how that happens some times, right?!

Lighting and art go hand in hand. Typically, light is used to illuminate artworks of all types, from paintings to sculptures, to even the furniture you have in your home. Light, however, can be so much more than that. Artists have begun to use light as their medium, and the results are just phenomenal. Not only does this “light art” offer a new medium for artists to express themselves but it also offers everyday people like you the chance to be more creative when lighting your home.

Light can trick the senses. It can instill a feeling. It can calm you; it can energize you, and, once the sun goes down, it can work as a function for you. Here are three ways you can use light to change your space.

Make it Appear Bigger:

Claustrophobic spaces are terrible. They close in on you, limit your space, and can even cause an increased sense of anxiety in some people. To make your room appear larger, opt for lights that light up the walls, and the corners of your room that typically get the least amount of light. Install wall scones to bring a muted, calm light that also makes the space feel bigger and more dynamic. They are perfect to make your room a sanctuary after a long day at work.

How Light, Movement & Scale Can Help Make Your Small Space Look Bigger!

Unless you have thousands upon thousands of square feet in your home, and just a couple people living there, you’re probably always looking for little ways to make your small space look bigger. Am I right? I know I’M always looking for little and EFFECTIVE ways to make OUR spaces look bigger! So when Christopher Austin sent me this post full of actual “technical” ways to make space look bigger through light, movement and scale…wow! I LOVE it! Check out his ideas…

Property is expensive and it is often necessary to compromise on the location or space in order to make our home look bigger and feel more comfortable. Having a smaller house does have advantages but it can also feel claustrophobic; thankfully there are many ways you can make your home seem much larger than it is:

Shelves

Shelves are essential in a home because they’re excellent for storage. However, they can also be used to create the illusion of space. Shelves on a wall which go all the way to the ceiling will naturally draw your eye upwards; making the room feel bigger and brighter.

The Quest for Good Lighting

So I have ONE MORE THING to accomplish before I’m finally done with the redo of our Master Bedroom. And what might that one thing be? Lamps. I’m on the hunt for lamps.

As it happens, I also jumped into a living room redo (spurred on by my husband’s purchase of a new couch) and I’m on the lookout for lamps for THAT room, too! (I may or may not be a glutton for punishment…)

So I’ve been poking around a bit. As it happens, yellow is an accent color in both rooms…so I almost thought of getting the same lamps for both rooms…but then I decided I would get bored with that pretty quickly. SO, I thought maybe I would go with SUPER eclectic lighting to up the excitement factor.

Whatcha think?

On Refreshing Your Home…with New Light Fixtures!

Chances are, if you built your home, you picked out all of your own light fixtures. You tailored each of them to the space they were installed in, and probably even arranged your decor in that particular room to compliment those light fixtures. Am I right?

But if you’re like me, and you bought your home after it had been previously lived-in, you may have ended up with a few light fixtures that were…less than ideal. If you’re nodding your head right now, I have JUST the solution for you.

Parrot Uncle.

“Who’s uncle? He does lights?” my husband questioned.

“No no no! ParrotUncle.com!”

I got a raised eyebrow on that one, folks. That is, until I showed him the site.

The first set of lights that I’ve been looking to replace since we moved into our home almost 3 years ago are the track lights that are in our kitchen. They are dated, they are dingy, and they are HOT. And come on now, y’all, who wants to stand over the stove and take THAT heat PLUS have heat beating down on you from above? Not me!

See what I mean?

Now sure, I could run down to Home Depot, which is about 10 minutes away, and grab some lights to replace these with. I’m sure they would be nice.

But, I’m not looking for some run-of-the-mill standard lights. I had something specific in mind. So I decided to look at the pendant lighting from Parrot Uncle and see what I might find.

The website itself is SO easy to navigate. I knew I specifically wanted some pendant lights, and it was as easy as going to ceiling lights, then pendant lights, and then I narrowed it down to the Vintage Industrial category. (You can also narrow things down by price, material, color, height and number of lights!)

And look what I found…
