Tips for Healthy Eating as a Family

The more I read labels on foods I’ve eaten all my life, the more my eyebrows raise. There is SO MUCH JUNK in our food! Sure, the “junky” food seems easier to grab and prepare, but in the long run, healthy eating is way more worth it!

When it comes to healthy eating as a family, time management and budgeting can make it a bit difficult to get the hang of. Especially if you are a parent (which is really where my brain is at these days), it’s important to foster healthy habits in your children when they’re young so they can carry those habits into the rest of their lives. Here are some ways to stick to a healthy diet on a budget, and to encourage positive habits for your kids.

Find a Farmers’ Market

The price for fresh produce at farmers’ markets is nearly unbeatable. You can stock up on locally grown food that’s in season to use for the week or freeze for a later date. At some farmers’ markets, you can find free-range eggs, delicious homemade jellies and jams, and raw honey. Since you’re buying food that’s in season and cutting out the transport costs, you’ll save quite a bit of money on produce.

Cook With Your Kids

Nothing is more frustrating than preparing a healthy meal just to have your child turn it down. To avoid this, try collaborating as a family to find meals that you’ll all enjoy. Once you’ve made a plan for the week, involve your children in the cooking process. Even young children can take an important role, like snapping green beans or topping a casserole with cheese. When they’ve helped to create a delicious meal, your kids will be more motivated to eat it and their confidence will grow in the kitchen.

How to Make Your Parties Healthy

It’s Spring Break around these parts this week, which got me thinking how close it is to SUMMER! Oh, summer and all the wonderful parties that come along with it! But sometimes I feel like parties involve too much junk food, and sugar, and other nasty ingredients that certainly don’t add to the party later – especially when it comes to kids parties!

So when Tracey Clayton contacted me and asked if she could share some ways in which parties could be made HEALTHY, well. What a great idea! Let’s see what she’s got for us!

Whether you are two or ninety-two, nobody wants to miss out on a party. The event where fun is a priority, and enjoyment is a must, parties increase the happiness levels of all attending. And who doesn’t like all around smiles, laughter, good food, drinks, cheerful decorations, and cake? Well, sometimes our bodies. Because we tend to let loose, go all out, eat and drink in excess, and have just too much fun during parties, our bodies have to tolerate all that. Luckily, there are ways of making a party healthy, and still being able to have fun, and enjoy the party.

Mix It Up

Provide your guests with diversity, and moderate portions, they will surely be grateful for. Choice is a great way to ensure guests can fill their bellies by trying a little bit of everything. The color will amaze and attract everyone, while making the portions smaller in size ensure each person has their fill of your delectables.

Food on the Go

You always want to give your guests the chance to eat on the go, and be able to mingle. The best course of action is to provide them with delicious finger food. Still, nobody likes greasy fingers when it is time to shake a hand, or give a hug. Considering healthier finger food alternatives will not only leave your hands clean, enjoying the company of others, but will also leave room for cake, and other treats.

A Veg Alternative

Another thing you have to consider is the introduction of vegan and vegetarian alternatives. Because you never know who that plus one might be, having a backup plan enables you to keep a sound mind, knowing you can satisfy anyone’s taste buds. Some great vegetarian party recipes are so delicious, even the most fanatical meat-eaters will want to try these specialties, and have a healthier party experience.

Drinks Au Naturale

Go for more natural flavors when serving drinks. Kids will adore sugar-free drinks made from freshly squeezed juice, healthier than industrial fizzy sodas. Also, you have a chance to experiment with flavors that may prove to be your guests’ next best drink. And grownups will be amazed by addition of pomegranate juice to club soda, or your very own home-made drink recipe, to spice up their beverage. Finally, be sure to make water available, especially if you hold your party during summer.

Fun Snacks for Healthy Kids!

It’s a busy life these days, isn’t it? Especially as we’re gearing up to finish out this school year! We’re always running to an important event, toting along the littles in our lives, and, although they normally go with the flow pretty well, every once in a while a drink or a snack is needed. If proper planning has fallen by the wayside, frazzled caregivers find it easiest to run through a drive-through and grab something for the hungry monsters, and while that meets the need in the moment, it defeats the purpose of raising healthy kids in the future!

I worked my way through college as a nanny for triplet boys, plus their baby brother. Snacks were a BIG deal! And the bigger the boys grew, the bigger their snacking appetites got! Sure, it was nice to have milk and cookies ready for them after school…but there are so many more healthy options that really are a lot more FUN! Today I want to share with you three options that can be as healthy but still as easy as you want them to be! Are you ready?
