A Quick Guide to Using Natural Products (Recipes Included!)

We use lots of natural products around our home, and the main reason for that is, we have two 2-year-olds. And man, are they QUICK these days! They can do some serious damage in the amount of time it takes me to move a load of clothes from the washer to the dryer, let me tell you what! They keep us on our toes, so the more natural products we use in the house, the less of a poison control issue we run into! (Or at least, that’s our hope! HA!)

Recipes for Natural Products

Natural products are relatively easy to make. The golden rule in each of these products is to use available ingredients and use as few ingredients as possible. Natural deodorant, for example, uses some of the most available ingredients in a home setting and therefore saves on money without compromising on the safety. It is also important to mention that the process for this project is simple and everybody can successfully make a deodorant. Continue reading

The Definitive Guide To Natural Laundry Detergents

Have you ever considered what detergent you are washing your clothes with, or do you simply choose the cheapest option on the shelf? In other words, is your laundry natural laundry? Or artificial laundry?

Of course it can be difficult to find the right balance between your budget and your environmental concerns. But, there are a number of natural laundry detergents which you can use that won’t break the bank and will do an excellent job at washing your clothes. Using the right laundry detergent can result in the best possible fabric care for your clothing!

You should be aware that the more natural a product is, the more time you will need to spend pre-treating stains. While natural laundry detergents can be very effective, they do not contain the chemicals associated with premium brands. While these chemicals do make it easier to clean fabrics, there is the environmental factor to consider.

Manufactured Natural Laundry Powder

You can find these on the shelves in your local store and in the health store. There are several manufacturers who create laundry detergent completely naturally. The main ingredient in these types of detergents is sodium carbonate; also known as washing soda.

If you have water that contains magnesium sulfate, you should not use this type of detergent; it will not dissolve. The clumping will cause damage to your machine over an extended period of time.

Detergents With Enzymes

This type of detergent is about as close as you can get to the main brands in terms of cleaning power.  With these products, you’ll notice a longer ingredient list; but they don’t contain any artificial brighteners. These detergents are usually scent free, but there are a few that give a gentle, natural odor.

A Decorator’s Guide That Will Refresh Your Home Completely

Many times, when I post something new that I’ve done around our house, people respond to me in excitement and then disappointment. Excitement because they like what I did, and disappointment because they want to replicate it, or do something else in their home, and they just don’t know how to get the results they’re dreaming of.

Trust me, I know the feeling! I’m NOT an interior designer! I have no training at all along those lines! If there are 3 hard and firm rules of decorating, I sure don’t know them! But I stick close to the folks who DO, and I try to learn as much as I can from them, and apply it in my own way. So when Katleen Brown contacted me regarding a post full of ways to refresh the home, I knew it needed to be shared with all of you!

A serene home is what most people long for. After a tiring day at work, you want to go home and have a moment of relaxation without disturbance from the outside world. Wendy Wonder once said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave and feels even better to come back.” This is, by all means, true. However, this will only happen if you are going back to a clean, tranquil environment; otherwise, you won’t be eager to go home. Something else that often happens is that we get so used to a certain environment that it no longer offers the satisfaction it once used to. That is why you need to refresh your home once in a while. Below, we look at ideas you can incorporate in your home, that will make it feel new and refreshed once again. They include:

  • Rethink the Colors

Most times, the colors in our homes are influenced by our tastes and preferences. However, it is not always that we choose the right colors. Psychologists say that certain shades trigger emotional responses in people. That is to say that some colors will make your home feel peaceful while others will make it a bit chaotic. The different shades of color gray, for example, have been seen to make the house look more spacious. On the other hand, soft blues and greens colors have been shown to be more relaxing. Don’t forget to refresh and choose light colors for the curtains.

  • Rearrange the Furniture

In life, it’s the little things that make the whole world of difference. Before you go ahead and buy unnecessary things in a bid to make your home livelier, you may need to reconsider the arrangement of your furnishings. According to Joseph Ferrari, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at DePaul University, the kitchen is a great place to start. Eco-friendly home decor ideas for this include a refresh by repainting the cabinets and using attractive knobs, rather than having new ones altogether.
