I feel like there’s always some kind of housework or project to be done around our home. Do you feel the same way? My goodness, when do we REST?!
Of course, if I didn’t have any projects to do, I would probably be bored, so I guess, bring on the projects!
No matter what they are, home projects must be put into an order of importance. Into a priority list. Because if something silly gets taken care of before something that gravely effects the entire household, well, there’s no sense in that! So when Joshua Nelson contacted me regarding a post on some emergency projects around your home that simply cannot wait, I figured it would be good for all of us to take a look at his list!
Certain home repairs and improvements are a matter of luxury or enjoyment. They can be “put on the back burner” while you focus on other things. And other housework projects can’t be delayed without risking serious damage to your home’s value and/or living in extreme discomfort.
Here are four emergency housework projects that you should always be ready to tackle as soon as the need for them arises. Always be prepared for them with a complete plan of action and the right numbers to call.
1. Leaking or Burst Pipes
When you awake in the middle of the night to the sound of rushing water, or come home from work only to find your kitchen or bathroom flooded an inch deep, the first thing to do is shut off your water supply to prevent further flooding.
But you can’t do much with a cut off water supply: dishes, laundry, bathing, brushing your teeth, washing your hands, watering the garden, etc. Therefore, your second step must be to contact a 24/7 emergency plumber, like Plumbing Fix, to get you back to “normal” again as soon as possible.
2. Mold Growth on Your Walls
In the aftermath of a plumbing explosion or a flood, your home may be suffering from significant water damage. Even weeks later, mold may pop up on your walls, ceilings, and trim boards here and there.
Mold and mildew are more than mere nuisances. Black mold, for example, is toxic; and mold spores circulated by your HVAC system can end up being breathed in causing allergic reactions, incessant coughing, or even lung disease. Young children are especially susceptible, as are those with allergies or weak lungs.
Solution: keep the number for a mold removal and remediation company, like Restoration Elite, handy so you can get help 24/7.
3. Aggressive Pest Infestations
No home is ever 100% rid of all pests, but when a major infestation breaks out, it is important to act fast to avert permanent damage or the spread of harmful pathogens.
Termites can devour your home, bed bugs will give you bloody welts and sores, ants and moths will get into your food supplies, mice and rats will leave trails of bacteria-ridden feces along your walls, and roaches will scare and disgust you. The list goes on.
You will likely want to eradicate your unwelcome guests yourself, but if that fails, waste no time in contacting a local, reputable pest control service.
4. Serious Roof Damage
If you live in a cold climate and your roof gets covered with an ice dam, leaks are likely to develop. Heat drying and cracking up caulk and sealant lines along chimneys, flashing, and vents can also lead to leakage. A bad storm may hurl broken-off tree branches into your roof of pound it with hail till the shingles are dimpled and badly weakened.
Finally, the mere passing of time will lead to asphalt shingles eventually getting brittle and breaking; and high winds may rip random shingles off, leaving portions of your roof dangerously exposed.
Remember that your roof is all that stands between the weather and your home. Water that gets in through your roofing can cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in repairs. It’s just not worth putting off a roof job thinking that delay will somehow save you money.
Save yourself the stress by being prepared for the inevitable damages to your home. By having a planned out repair strategy you might even be able to save money in the long run.
