I’ve heard folks talk quite a bit about their New Year’s resolutions in the past week or so – you probably have, too! And something I keep hearing over and over from people is, “I’m gonna declutter my house!”
I’m right there, too. I have a whole list of spaces in my home that need some major decluttering, and I’ve already started on a few of them. But the other day, someone asked me why I was even bothering with it at all! They felt as if clutter was what happened when life happened, and there was nothing that could be done about it.
First of all, I don’t believe that for a second. Second of all, I know it’s not true in MY home, so I knew it couldn’t be true for everyone. Do you live in a highly-organized living space, or can you just not be bothered about the “creative” chaos that surrounds you? If you belong to the second category, you might want to re-consider your fondness of clutter for the following, very important reasons (quite a few of them are related to your health):

We all tend to accumulate too much stuff over the years. We buy things we think we have to have, but after a few months, they end up stashed in a closet or attic and we go months without seeing them. We get gifts for birthdays and Christmas that we don’t really love but we don’t have the heart to get rid of out of respect for the giver. We hang onto clothes that we’ve grown out of in the hopes that we’ll lose those 10 pounds finally.
Over time, it can all add up. Every closet and storage space in our home is packed with things. The clutter reduces the amount of space we have in the house, and it can make our homes less comfortable and inviting. Clearing out the clutter can help you feel more relaxed in your own home.
Here are a few smart ways to get rid of clutter in your home:
Analyze Every Space
You may not even realize how much clutter you have in your home because you have stuffed it away out of sight. Once you start sorting through your closets, your garage, your attic, and your crawlspace, you may be shocked to realize how much you have accumulated.
In order to really reduce the clutter in your home, you need to go through every space and analyze every item in every box. You’ll be able to maximize the amount you get rid of and the space you create.
Be Honest and Objective
There are many reasons why we hang on to items that we don’t necessarily need anymore. You may think that you’ll use the item again, such as those reams of fabric you’ve stored for craft projects. Or you may think that you’ll need them again, such as those specialty kitchen utensils and pans that you only used once.
So, we’ve now lived in our house for almost two-and-a-half years, and I noticed something the other day: we’re starting to accumulate STUFF.
Now…I HATE stuff. There’s no point in just having STUFF. And it really bothers me when I look around the house and I just see STUFF.
So I’ve been working on eliminating some of our stuff. Some has gone to friends or family who are in need of it. Some has gone to the consignment store or a yard sale site where we can get a little money for it. Some has been digitized and shredded. And some has just plain been thrown away.
I’m feeling a lot better about things in this regard lately, but, allow me to point this out: there’s a difference between having STUFF and having things that just need some good organizing. I mean, you really shouldn’t get rid of all of your socks because your sock drawer is cluttered. Your feet might get cold at some point. You just need to save a little space and do a little organizing.
So when Georgia from FlexiSpace contacted me to see if I was interested in her Space Savers Encyclopedia infographic, I wasn’t quite sure what a Space Savers Encyclopedia was! But as soon as I saw it, I knew it was exactly what I needed…and probably what some of you need, too!

Can you believe that today is JUNE 1?! (It’s also the beginning of hurricane season, which is a big deal for us in Florida. And since the painters literally finished painting the outside of our house on Friday, I’m not sure whether we’re totally smart – since everything is nicely sealed now – or totally gonna have an insurance claim on our hands – and have to pay for new paint all over again! I guess we’ll find out…)

I have a hard time, sitting still around the house. I really do. Part of it is that I’ve always had a hard time sitting still, and part of it is that when I sit down, I notice something that needs to be done. So I get back up to take care of it, and one thing leads to another, and by the time I’m able to sit down again, it’s time for bed, so there’s really no point!
See, I’ve never been much of a procrastinator. Unless I’m in a funk. Which is not very often. I like to get things done as quickly and efficiently as possible, and I’m not really one to put things off until tomorrow.
Why do I do things in this crazy manner, you might ask? Well, I tend to function much better and much less-stressed when I know that my home is clean and my workspace is organized and I don’t have a list of things a mile long that need accomplishing. I also tend to have a much better day when all my ducks are in a row, and part of that comes from the fact that I really despise CLUTTER. It makes me feel like this:
Clutter is messy, and disorganized, and takes up space, and is overall unnecessary. I have always felt that when clutter begins to stack up, it prevents me from being the best me that I can be. So I work hard around our home and around my office to make sure that there is no “stuff” that can “clutter” any particular area. As a result of this, my husband would say that he takes out the trash far too often! But I don’t just throw things away. I re-purpose and give to others who can make use of items that I am not using. Because after all, if it’s going to just sit around at our house, why not give it to someone who will really use it?
