Springtime on My Front Porch!

Considering that our high temperature today is slated to be 91 degrees (HOLY COW!) I’d say that Spring has sprung here in Florida! Which means there’s lots going on at our house these days!

One of our big projects to complete in the Spring is the painting of the house. Blech.

At first we started out saying that we could do it ourselves, no problem! The more we thought about it, the more we thought it would be better to hire someone else to do it instead. (You know how that goes, right?!) So we’re in the process of shopping for quotes, and hoping to get it taken care of within the next few weeks! The main color will be some form of tan, with white trim, and black fixtures and door. Pretty cut and dry.

In the midst of that project, we’re working on freshening up the landscaping around the front of the house, and in the back yard getting the raised garden beds completed and the seedlings transferred, adding more pineapples to the pineapple bed, adding more herbs to the patio, and hey, we’re thinking about a pool, too! (We must be nuts!)

Because, before the weather starts to get cool again in the fall, we will be having our front porch screened in! Another project! Our BACK porch is already screened in and used daily at our house – we have a table and chairs out there, as well as our grill and several plants…and CoCo the black kitty and Taffy the white doggie LOVE to spend time out there! It’s a great extension of the living room – you can pretty much bet that if the weather is nice outside, I’ll have the doors open to the back porch. I love the fresh air! So, it only makes sense to screen in the front porch, too!

But since it will be a few more months before we screen in the front porch, I figured it needed a bit of a refresher for Spring.

I started with this main piece for the front porch:

This came from Kirkland’s for almost 40% off right before Christmas – don’t you love it?! (Don’t mind the dirty tile, that’s LONG overdue for a good pressure-washing!) I had originally been looking for a black wrought iron table and chair set to go here, but when I saw this, and ON SALE, I couldn’t pass it up. And it ROCKS! Love that!

I had these **insert sarcasm here** LOVELY terra-cotta-colored planters that I had used a long time ago for another project, and I was keeping them in the backyard for herbs, but then I realized I could update them for the front porch SO easily!

Just a couple of coats and they looked brand new, and so pretty!

Once those were finished, I tossed some soil in and planted some pretty impatiens – I love the white ones! Plus, they match the wreath on the front door.

I picked up a few more pots and filled them with some brightly-colored flowers…

…and there ya have it!

Nothing fancy, just a little fling of spring!

Now you can see how badly the actual landscaping in the front needs to be done! YUCK! I’ll get right on that, I promise.

How do YOU update the outside of your home for Spring?

Due to the amount of comments from all of my wonderful readers, it is not always possible for me to respond to each one. However, I absolutely do read them all, and if you’d like to address something specific, or have a question for me, please don’t hesitate to email me at Kristen@theroadtodomestication.com. I will respond to your email as soon as possible! Thank you for visiting the blog!

  1. Look at all those pretty flowers! I am so bad with plants & flowers – they die immediately the second I lay my hands on them!

  2. That turned out so cute Kristen! So tell me… you have to live in a warmer climate than I do. We are still having fairly cold weather here. Lots of rain too! Blah!!

  3. I loooove that rocker! We recently got a patio set and it was something looong overdue as well. Our porch was always so plain without it!
Last year we planted one garden area and my perennials are starting to pop up again! The left side was larger and it didn’t get done last year, so that’s our goal for this year. Hubs has actually already done a rock border and put in the mulch. I just have to go pick out my flowers and put those in!

  4. 91 sounds WONDERFUL to me! Your porch looks great! I haven’t decorated yet because it’s still cold and rainy here in PIttsburgh. BLAH. We just got back from Williamsburg which as gorgeous and wonderful and I got some great ideas for decor. I’m really digging the pineapples 🙂

  5. What beautiful pictures! And 91 degrees??!! Since it’s only 39 degrees here in Maine and we still have large patches of snow (and another snowfall just yesterday morning), it’s hard to even imagine temps like that!

But I love your whole “look” there – the rocking bench, entryway, flowers – all look so cheery!

  6. Kristen! Our high temp today hit about 42 – warm enough to job to the Post Office but not quite ready for outdoors planting and playing – so enjoyed the updated look of your planters and the beautiful ideas! Thank you 🙂 I’ll be needing to do some updating this year, too

  7. Wow look at all those beautiful flowers! I’m so jealous it’s still so chilly here in Toronto. I love what you did to your front of house, I need to work on mine!

  8. I love the wreath on your front door-so pretty! I have tulips blooming right now and am trying to figure out what to do about the wasps that have invaded my boxwoods right by the front door (scary!). I usually try to hold off until closer to Mother’s Day for a lot of updates because the weather here in the Midwest tends to be a bit unpredictable and I don’t like to hassle with covering my plants. I’m ready to bring out all the flowers though!

  9. I love flowers! Your garden looks awesome and flowers are so gorgeous. I really like the front porch as well. This would definitely give a very pleasant spring time experience. The whole house is really rocking!

  10. How awesome! That rocker is gorgeous! Luke, Rory and I have a swinger in the back yard and we love to sit out there as we take a break from gardening or Rory and I will sit out there in the mornings to drink coffee and listen to the noisy birds! I can completely understand a love for sitting on one of those things on a nice day! Thanks for the GREAT post, Kristen!
