I’ve never really been one to love Indian food.
(That may sound like a terrible way to begin a review on a line of Authentic Indian Cuisine…but bear with me!)
I’m a gal who tends to get in a rut with food. I find something I like and I stick with it – to a fault, most times. I’m not very good at branching out of my comfort zone, and I’m not one for anything spicy – that’s why I’ve always stayed away from Indian Cuisine.
So when Sarah from Tandoor Chef contacted me about reviewing some of their products, my first inclination was to politely decline. But then I decided, you know what? It’s time to try something new! And can I just say…I’m SO glad I made that decision!
Tandoor Chef uses only the finest Indian spices and flavors to make their authentic Indian food, and of course, I was sold right off the bat with their gluten-free and vegetarian/vegan options!
I picked up and taste-tested three different frozen dinners from Tandoor Chef: Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Tandoori with Spinach and Kofta Curry!
I decided to give the Chicken Tikka Masala a go first:
Okay. Can I just say that if THIS is Indian food, then I don’t have a problem with Indian food at all?! First of all, the rice cooked PERFECTLY, and I often find that rice in a frozen dinner either never makes it to “cooked”, or it’s hard as a rock. And not because it’s still frozen. No such issue here! And the chicken in this dish had none of the dried-out freezer taste that sometimes haunts a frozen dinner containing chicken. Add to that the creamy sauce with the PERFECT amount of spice to it, and I was SOLD. I LOVED this one!
Excited for what was coming, I moved on to the Chicken Tandoori with Spinach! I’m a huge fan of spinach, so I was pretty sure I would be a fan of this combination.
Now, let me preface these comments by saying, I do NOT like spicy things at all. While the combination of flavors on this was pretty good, it had a little more kick to it than I prefer. (I’m pretty sure that’s because I’m a sissy!) And let me say this: my hubby tried this one when I commented on the spice, and proclaimed that it was perfect, and not too spicy at all! To me, the consistency of the spinach puree and the taste of the chicken – both spot-on!
Last but not least, the Kofta Curry!
I was disappointed that I couldn’t eat this one, because it smelled AMAZING, but this particular offering is not gluten-free. It IS vegan and cholesterol free, and cholesterol free is exactly what my husband needs, so HE tried this one out! “A great flavor combination,” he called it, “And I didn’t think I would like the rice because it has spinach in it – but the rice is good!”
In the end, I was definitely pleased with the Tandoor Chef experience! These are not your standard frozen dinners, that’s for sure. It’s obvious that ingredients and preparation are key when it comes to these dishes. Hey, if they can turn a non-lover of Indian food into someone who plans on buying more of their products, well, then, that says it all!
