Did any of my momma-readers out there crave ICE when you were pregnant? It’s the weirdest thing! I don’t know if I want it because I need to be better at staying hydrated or I like the crunch or I like the cold, but ice is at the top of my cravings these days. You’d think that would be pretty easy to come by, except that our ice from our refrigerator/freezer does NOT taste good.
Am I really being this picky, I asked myself. Seriously, you have ice right here in the kitchen, just eat that! Why do you have to GO GET ice?! And then I realized why it wasn’t tasting so hot – our water filter needed to be replaced. Which got me thinking about making sure various household appliances are maintained…especially the refrigerator.
A refrigerator is a very expensive piece of machinery. Therefore, you must be sure to take special care of it. This will ensure that it lasts for many years so you will not need to buy a new one. There are a number of ways you can go about doing this. The most important thing is to understand all of the details about the refrigerator you have purchased. Read through the owner’s manual. It is amazing how many people spend well over $1,000 on a fridge and have no idea how to properly take care of it because they are too lazy to read the owner’s manual (I’m pointing fingers at myself here!). Here are some of the best ways to keep your refrigerator running perfectly.
1. Have the refrigerator serviced regularly
You most likely take your car to a professional mechanic on a regular basis to have the oil changed, the tires rotated and other various maintenance tasks performed. You do this to ensure that your car does not have any serious mechanical problems. The same logic should be applied to your refrigerator. It is similar to your car in that it is a machine that will break down if it is not properly cared for. Therefore, regular maintenance must be performed to ensure this does not happen. It would be wise to hire a professional refrigerator technician to take a look at your machine and make sure it is performing exactly as it should. The money that you will need to pay the technician will be a fraction of what it will cost to repair the fridge if it breaks down.
2. Choose the temperature wisely
You must put some thought into the exact temperature that you are going to set your fridge at. Setting it too low will cause your machine to work much harder than it needs to. This will not be good if your fridge is forced to do this for an extended period of time. The stress from having to constantly maintain an extremely cold temperature will inevitably lead to mechanical problems for your machine. Many people do not realize that their food can be kept sufficiently cool without using the lowest temperature setting. There is another advantage to raising the temperature in your fridge. It will also mean that you will not be using as much electricity. Therefore, you will be able to save money on your electric bill.
3. Change your water filter
It is very important for you to change your refrigerator water filter on a regular basis. Failure to do so will result in the purity and taste of your water being seriously compromised. This will also become a serious health issue if you go for a significant period of time without changing the water filter. It is a simple thing to do. Check the owner’s manual to find out the manufacturer recommendations for changing the water filter.
4. Close the door completely
This sounds like common sense. However, some people do not make sure there is a tight seal when they close their refrigerator door. Cold air will escape from the fridge if there is not a tight seal. The result of this will be very bad for your machine. It will be forced to work harder to keep the fridge at the temperature you have set it at. Mechanical problems will result from this. (I discovered the other day that the fridge we have in our garage does not close well unless it is pushed rather hard – perfect example!)
So, when was the last time you had YOUR refrigerator serviced?
