You know what’s “back in style” these days? Handmade gifts! Isn’t that funny how things roll back around after a few years and we literally repeat history? Makes me wonder if Etsy will still be huge in 10 or 20 years. Gosh, I sure hope so! I LOVE Etsy!
When birthdays and the holidays come around it can be easy to fall into the temptation of settling for the easy route of buying someone a simple device or gadget off the shelf. However, sometimes the more humble and less expensive option of a homemade gift can leave a longer lasting impression and show a higher degree of thoughtfulness. Anybody can buy someone a gift card or get them the latest game console, but it takes some creativity and a personal touch to make a homemade gift. Unfortunately, coming up with an idea for a homemade gift is not always easy. With that said, here are four homemade gift ideas to get your wheels spinning:
Miniature Nativity Scene
During the Christian holidays, like Christmas and Easter, many people buy cards and artworks related to the nativity scene. Why not create your own miniature handmade manger and inn stall complete with farm animals, the Wise Men, Mother Mary, Joseph, and all the other familiar characters. This is a great gift idea because it makes a nice mantle decoration that will stick around and serve as a reminder of the day the gift was given. It also helps to serve as the reminder of the true meaning behind many of the holidays that we often take for granted. You could use wood, or even fabric, or perhaps paint ceramic figurines!
Water Color of the Sermon on the Mount
The Sermon on the Mount, as told in Matthew 5 KJV, provides the perfect setting for a painting, which is why so many artists have already covered this historic scene. Add your own unique touch to it and present it handmade as a gift to someone in the form of a water color painting and you’ll be sure to impress the recipient. One good thing about going with this scene for a painting is that it has been done so many times, so you’ll have plenty of previous works to reference…especially if painting isn’t exactly your forte!
Custom Coffee Mugs
Most of us don’t go a single day without having a cup of coffee in the morning. As such, coffee mugs make excellent homemade gifts. There are a number of online services that will let you customize mugs with artwork or a phrase of your choice. Whether it’s a favorite Bible verse, the person’s name, a saying that they use a lot, or just something humorous that will peak their interest, a thoughtful coffee mug is sure to get a welcomed response out of anyone.
Recipe Photo Frame
Photo frames make great homemade gifts because they add a bit of extra nostalgia to family photos. Most of the time family get-togethers involve a lot of cooking and special recipes. Why not combine the fun of cooking with a memorable photo using a recipe frame, which lists the recipe in the frame alongside the picture? You can snap a picture of the person enjoying their meal and then present the custom recipe frame as a gift during dessert.
Sometimes all the gift ideas in the world can’t compete with just taking a few minutes here and there to pay attention to the things a person is interested in. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and take notes on your quest to choosing the perfect gift.
