Fun Snacks for Healthy Kids!

It’s a busy life these days, isn’t it? Especially as we’re gearing up to finish out this school year! We’re always running to an important event, toting along the littles in our lives, and, although they normally go with the flow pretty well, every once in a while a drink or a snack is needed. If proper planning has fallen by the wayside, frazzled caregivers find it easiest to run through a drive-through and grab something for the hungry monsters, and while that meets the need in the moment, it defeats the purpose of raising healthy kids in the future!

I worked my way through college as a nanny for triplet boys, plus their baby brother. Snacks were a BIG deal! And the bigger the boys grew, the bigger their snacking appetites got! Sure, it was nice to have milk and cookies ready for them after school…but there are so many more healthy options that really are a lot more FUN! Today I want to share with you three options that can be as healthy but still as easy as you want them to be! Are you ready?

  • Apple, Peanut Butter & Granola Sandwiches

What you need: green or red apples, peanut butter, granola

How to prepare: core the apples and slice them across (so as to make apple “rings”). Apply peanut butter to one side of each apple ring. Sprinkle granola on top of the peanut butter on one ring, and sandwich with another buttered ring.

You can make this as healthy as you want to! Organic apples, organic peanut butter or even almond butter, and any kind of healthy granola, even homemade or gluten-free!

  • Fruit Cones

What you need: ice cream cones, a variety of fruit

How to prepare: fill ice cream cones with chopped fruit. (Yes, it’s that simple!)

Again, you can make this as healthy as you want! Sugar-free ice cream cones and fresh fruit! Compare with the idea of a drive-thru soft-serve – this is a much healthier alternative – but still FUN!

  • Yogurt “Dots”

What you need: your favorite flavor(s) of yogurt, a pastry bag and medium tip

How to prepare: Fill the pastry bag with yogurt and “pipe” it out into dots on wax paper laid over a cookie sheet. Freeze.

These are three ideas of many for fun and healthy snacks for your kiddos!

And speaking of healthy snacks, one of the reasons why unhealthy snacks are so convenient is because they’re EASY. It’s EASY to grab a bag of chips filled with fat, or a package of fruit gummies filled with sugar. So make it EASY for your kids to snack healthy! Why not set up a snack station pre-stocked with healthy options? Things like…

  • Grape or cherry tomatoes
  • Skim cheese sticks
  • Sliced cucumbers
  • Sugar-free whole grain cereals
  • Carrot sticks
  • Turkey pepperoni

Prep these items (and there are so many other things similar!) in baggies, and have them ready in a bin in your fridge or pantry, for the kids to grab on the go!

With proper planning and simple snacks made from healthy ingredients, you can set your kids on the road to a healthy future NOW!

  1. This post is so well written just like if you had kids! Thanks for these healthier options and yes, the unhealthy stuff is easier to grab, isn’t it! I will have to try them (maybe for myself more than anything else) lol! That yogurt pop is genius, I am sure we will enjoy them. We love youyrt over here. A healthy snac station is a great idea, too. I call them nibble trays!!!

  3. It’s definitely easy to miss out on healthy snacks because unhealthy ones are more convenient. Keeping cut veggies in bags is a smart tip.

  4. Looks so healthy and delicious as well. I really love the idea of Ice cream cones with chopped fruits and Yogurt Dots. I bet, kids would definitely love this. Will have to try this for sure. Thanks a lot for sharing this healthy snacks idea.

  6. So Kristen, do you then have to keep the yogurt dots frozen? Pudding Pop would love those!
Face-palm, why didn’t I think of premaking snacks for MYSELF like this?? Since I’m gf, and sugar free, as you know, sometimes it’s hard to get a snack, because you need to be out and about or something.
    Thanks for the ideas!
