A Lil’ Garden Update!

One of my big plans for our backyard is to have three (LARGE) raised beds full of vegetables! I’m working on introducing more and more veggies into every meal; sometimes even “hidden” in places my husband would not expect, ha! (Do you have to do that, too?!)

However, I’m still working a full-time job, running my own business on the side and doing this lil’ blog…so I don’t have all the time in the world to cultivate a huge garden right now. And I’m really good at overwhelming myself with too much to do! So I wanted to start VERY small – see what grows well in our yard and in our climate…and, let’s face it…see what I DON’T kill!

So, as of right now, I have three things growing. Yes, just three! But they’re all growing WELL, so that’s the idea, right?

1. Tomatoes – There are SO many of them – just clusters and clusters! I can’t wait to slice these up with some fresh mozzarella and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar!

2. Potatoes –Β This was a totally happy accident. You know what happens when you leave some potatoes in the pantry for too long? They start to sprout! I had totally forgotten about a pretty lil’ red potato I had left over, and when I found it, it had sprouted three BIG ol’ sprouts! So I cut them out and planted them!

3. Pineapple –Β It takes over a year for a pineapple to grow, and this one is still pretty new, but it’s doing great! Once I make sure I can grow one, I’m gonna be growing a BUNCH of them!

A few more things I’m wanting to plant in my veggie garden as time goes on:

  • Corn
  • Sunflowers (for the seeds!)
  • Bell peppers
  • Cucumbers
  • Squash
  • Zucchini
  • Romaine lettuce

I’m also wanting to add some citrus trees (probably a lemon and an orange tree) as well as some blueberry bushes and some strawberry plants…and maybe some grapes, too!

So what about you? Do you do any gardening? What is your FAVORITE thing to grow?

  1. I live on the 7th floor of an apartment building with no balcony and we are not allowed on the roof!! I only wish I could attempt to grow some veggies. Those tomatoes look really good!! If I were you I would try cucumbers or maybe string beans!!

    • Oh, you need a big window sill! Cucumbers are definitely on the list…string beans are a good idea!

  2. Your garden is coming along great, I am so jealous. We are trying to find a home to buy so I can plant a garden at this point I am going to have to hope the house we buy comes with a garden. I had a pineapple planted in our home back in Florida. I put it in a container if we moved but we moved too far to take it, I had 1 1/2 years into that thing and then my mother got to enjoy it!

    • When we rented before, I had lots of things growing in pots. I had to move those when we bought, and they didn’t do so well πŸ™ You’re doing good to wait!

  3. Fresh tomatoes are the best things in the world! I can barely eat a hothouse tomato! Your little garden looks so healthy!

This year I only have flowers and herbs! I never got around to planting my peppers and tomatoes.

Looking forward to seeing how your pineapple does! I think it may get too cold here in SC to grow pineapples. But I would love to grow pineapples and avocados. And lemon and limes! πŸ™‚

    • I am SO looking forward to slicing up one of those tomatoes! And you’re doing good with your herbs – I haven’t got mine going yet!

  4. Your tomatoes are looking good! My brother would be ready for some fried green tomatoes! It all looks like you are doing a great job with your gardening!

    • I know, someone asked me about fried green tomatoes the other day! I’ve never made those before, I guess it’s my duty living in the South to make some LOL

  5. I would love to grow anything, but sadly, I don’t have the right amount of sun in my yard. I had to look up how to grow a pineapple on YouTube. Very interesting!

  6. I definitely want to try growing a pineapple if they take off like that! Also, why didn’t I ever think to put my sprouting potatoes to work for me?!!!

    • It was a total experiment, Liz! Apparently there are several things that “re-grow” themselves. Post on that soon to come!

  7. I was hoping that this year would have been the year that we move into a house big enough for a yard. We’ve all been talking about having a nice vegetable and fruit garden! After seeing your pictures, I want it even more now!

  8. I don’t have a garden and I don’t have a place for one. I thought about doing raised beds but I would have to put them up quite high so the dogs don’t get into them. I would love to grown my own pumpkins for the fall.

    • My mom has waist-high raised beds! Her dog can’t get to them at all. Oh, PUMPKINS, that’s a great idea!!!

    • Oh, you’re all fancy, I don’t even know what classifies as a desert garden or a monsoon garden! You should do a blog post about it!

    • Yes, Annie, one day I’d like to own LOTS of land. Then I’ll have a field or two FULL of veggies, and never have to buy anything again LOL

    • Thank you! Yes, but they are also calming…I think, at least. Something about coming home from a stressful day and watering and fertilizing and weeding!

  9. My parents have a garden and my children love to help out in their garden. I honestly had no clue how long it takes to grow a pineapple. That would be so cool though!

    • Well, I planted mine late! It was just an experiment! That’s why I only did three LOL We’ll see how it turns out!
