I guess the one thing I didn’t realize about home ownership was how much CONSTANT work it is. I mean, seriously! I hate to be behind on things, so if I want to stay on top of stuff, there’s literally something to do every single day, and the weekends are taken up with larger projects! That’s only because the minute you fall behind…it takes SO much more work to catch back up!
Nevertheless, I always want our home to be at its best. So I’ll put in the work, for sure. But when Nick Stoyanov sent me over a guest post on the best ways to maintain a home, I figured it was fate. I needed it, for sure! Here’s Nick!
Homeowners know how hard it is to maintain your house. It is a constant work that never ends! Fortunately, there are some small tricks that can make it easier. Instead of doing things the hard way, why don’t you try these more efficient solutions?
Here is a list of 5 masterful ideas to maintain your home like a pro.
Taking care of your pool
There are a lot of homeowners who do not have a pool. One of the main reasons for this is that pools require a lot of money and time. Luckily, there is a way to address both of these problems. Most of the pool work (including pool pump maintenance, chlorination, cleaning, etc.) can be done without outside assistance. These are menial jobs that do not require any prior experience. Furthermore, pool maintenance is crucial not only because it protects your pool but it also safeguards the health of your whole family.
Check the isolation
Poor isolation or damage around your windows are the main reasons for heat loss during winter days. Although this may seem petty, it does result in enormous bills at the end of the month. Damage around windows can be easily remedied with a little bit of silicone. All you have to do is check for the draft to see if the cold air is coming inside. When you detect the problematic spots, just use silicone to fill them. Unfortunately, this fix can only be applied on minor damage. If window frames are starting to rot, you will have to go all-in and replace them.
Furnace cleaning is something that homeowners pay a lot for each and every year. Truth be told, it needs to be cleaned every now and then as it vastly improves its efficiency.
This is another thing that can be managed by you. First, start by checking the filters and other parts. The main thing about furnaces is to access all the smaller parts and individually clean them. Blower assembly cleaning can especially be tricky. However, with a bit of practice you will surely master it.
Cleaning the roof and gutters
Another big item on this list is the roof. Shingle damage can easily lead to leaks and can pose a real issue during the winter months. This is why homeowners should regularly check them for damage or discoloration and if needed replace them. Gutters can also be problematic as they tend to get stuffy during autumn due to falling leaves. They need to be cleaned allowing normal flow of water. Otherwise, they may start spilling to the side of the house causing structural damage. Finally, you need to check it parts of the gutters are damaged and replace them. If you find a problem, obviously, you need to consult a professional roofing contractor, as the roof is a very important component of your home!
Fix the pavement
Small cracks in pavement and concrete may seem negligible at first. However, they tend to lead to increased damaged to the structure.
When winter comes, all these small cracks get filled with water, then ice which turns cracks into gaping holes. Eventually, parts of your home may start falling off. Same goes for the pavement in front of your house. Best way to address this is while the issue is minor. As soon as you notice cracks, make sure to patch them with asphalt.
We are used to calling professional help whenever something bad happens with our home or property. Although there are certain things that shouldn’t be handled by us, most of them are manageable and do not require any particular skills. So, the next time you see an issue that needs addressing don’t be hasty to call a handyman. Instead, try to fix it with small tricks provided in this article.
